Ingredients:
For the Outer Dough (Rice Flour Dough):
1 cup rice flour
1 cup water
1 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
A pinch of salt
For the Filling:
1 cup grated fresh coconut
½ cup jaggery (adjust to taste)
1 tsp cardamom powder
1 tsp poppy seeds (optional)
1 tbsp chopped dry fruits (optional)
Instructions:
For the Filling:
Heat a pan on medium flame and add the grated coconut and jaggery.
Stir continuously until the jaggery melts and combines with the coconut. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
Add cardamom powder and optional poppy seeds or chopped dry fruits for added flavor and texture.
Once the filling mixture is dry and sticky, remove it from the heat and let it cool.
For the Outer Dough:
Boil water in a pan, add a pinch of salt, and 1 tsp ghee.
Slowly add the rice flour to the boiling water, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
Cover the pan and let the mixture cook on low heat for about 2-3 minutes.
Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough until smooth and soft.
Shaping the Modaks:
Grease your hands with a little ghee and take a small portion of the rice dough.
Roll it into a ball, then flatten it into a small disc or bowl shape.
Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
Gently bring the edges together to close and shape it into a pointed top, like a classic modak. If using a modak mould, press the dough and filling inside the mould for perfect shaping.
Steaming the Modaks:
Once all the modaks are shaped, place them in a greased steamer.
Steam the modaks for about 10-12 minutes until they become slightly translucent and glossy.
Remove from the steamer and let them cool slightly.
Serving:
Serve the modaks warm with a drizzle of ghee on top!
Enjoy these delicious, traditional modaks during festivals or as a sweet treat at home!
