Description
Here's a recipe for Mirch Karonde (Spicy Green Chili with Natal Plum), a tangy and spicy North Indian dish that pairs perfectly with simple roti or paratha:
Ingredients
200 grams karonda (natal plum or Bengal currant)
8-10 green chilies, slit lengthwise (adjust according to your spice preference)
2 tablespoons mustard oil (or any cooking oil)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds (rai)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds (saunf)
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
1 teaspoon coriander powder (dhania powder)
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 teaspoon amchur powder (dried mango powder)
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
1. Prepare the Karonda:
Wash the karonda thoroughly under running water.
Cut each karonda in half, removing the seeds if they are large (small seeds can be left in).
2. Prepare the Green Chilies:
Slit the green chilies lengthwise, keeping them whole. If you prefer less heat, you can remove the seeds.
3. Temper the Spices:
Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts to smoke lightly, then reduce the heat to medium.
Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds. Let them crackle and release their aroma.
Add asafoetida and stir for a few seconds.
4. Cook the Karonda and Green Chilies:
Add the slit green chilies to the pan and sauté for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.
Add the halved karonda and mix well with the green chilies.
Sprinkle turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Stir to coat the chilies and karonda evenly with the spices.
5. Simmer and Finish:
Cover the pan and cook on low heat for about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the karonda is tender and the flavors have melded together.
Add amchur powder for a tangy kick, and cook for another 2 minutes.
Adjust seasoning as needed.
6. Serve:
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Serve Mirch Karonde hot with roti, paratha, or as a side dish with your meal.
Mirch Karonde is a vibrant and flavorful dish, balancing the heat of green chilies with the tartness of karonda. It's a delightful accompaniment to any Indian meal, bringing a burst of tangy, spicy flavor to your plate. .
