Here's a simple and delicious Daal Chawal recipe for you!
Ingredients:
For the Daal:
1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal or masoor dal)
1 onion (finely chopped)
2 tomatoes (finely chopped)
2 green chilies (optional, chopped)
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder (optional)
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp coriander powder
4-5 garlic cloves (crushed)
1-inch ginger (grated)
2 tbsp oil or ghee (clarified butter)
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
3-4 cups water (adjust for the desired consistency)
For the Chawal (Rice):
1 cup basmati rice
2 cups water
Salt to taste
1 tsp oil or ghee
Instructions:
For the Daal:
1. Rinse the Lentils: Wash the lentils thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them for about 15-20 minutes.
2. Cook the Lentils: In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils, turmeric, salt, and 3-4 cups of water. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft. You can also cook them in a pot, but it will take longer.
3. Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):
Heat oil or ghee in a pan.
Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
Add tomatoes and cook until they soften.
Add coriander powder, garam masala, and red chili powder. Cook until the oil starts separating from the masala.
4. Combine: Pour the cooked tempering into the boiled lentils and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary. Let it simmer for another 5-7 minutes.
5. Garnish: Turn off the heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
For the Rice:
1. Rinse the Rice: Wash the rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
2. Cook the Rice: In a pot, add 2 cups of water, a pinch of salt, and 1 tsp of oil or ghee. Bring to a boil.
3. Simmer: Add the rinsed rice, cover the pot, and reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for 12-15 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
4. Fluff and Serve: Once done, turn off the heat and let the rice sit for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
Serving:
Serve the hot, flavorful daal with steamed rice (chawal) and garnish with a wedge of lemon or more fresh coriander. Enjoy with a side of papad or pickle for an extra burst of flavor!
